Week of December 15th...

Midterms! 
Remember, Monday and Tuesday are regular days of school. Attendance will be kept. 

We will be reviewing and practicing for the End of Course / Milestone Exam in American Literature, both Honors and Regular. 

In AP, we will be practicing Multiple Choice Questions from a released exam and re-writing Question #1 from the 2010 Released Exam.

Week of December 8th...

AP Literature: 

We will focus on Gender Studies and Critical Theory. Please bring your Blue Book. We will be reading "Daddy" by Sylvia Plath.

Honors American Literature: 

We will continue work on the Revolutionaries and our discussion regarding the American Dream during the time period. Please bring your packets to class.

Regular American Literature: 

We will be reading "The Devil and Tom Walker" and completing some activities to review literary terms.

Week of November 17th.....

Honors American Literature: 
We had a great time at the Booth Western Art Museum on Thursday!


Over the break, students should work on their short stories, essays, narrative poems, or cowboy poems. They can find more information at: http://boothmuseum.org/writing-through-art/

AP Literature:
We had a major paper due this past Wednesday for a test grade. I will work on grading those over the break. Students should be reading The Awakening this week. When we get back, we will have a test over the first 19 chapters.


Regular American Literature:
This week, we are finishing our unit on the Revolutionary Period. We have also been practicing for the Milestone students have to take in May.

Week of November 10th.....

Honors American Literature: 
This week, we are going to finish The Scarlet Letter by having a fishbowl discussion. This allows students to ask questions and share their ideas about the novel. We will also begin working on the assessment task for the unit, an essay that discusses core Puritan values. Students will have two days in the lab to work on the paper. They can continue to work over the weekend. It is due Monday the 17th.  Reminder, we are taking a field trip next week on Thursday the 20th!

AP Literature: 
This week, we are going to wrap-up our discussion of Heart of Darkness and Things Fall Apart. We are going to review what we have read and students will begin drafting an essay that is due next week. The essay will be a test grade and requires that they think about the themes we discussed as we read these texts.

Regular American Literature:

We are going to be reading documents from the Revolutionary Period and answering questions similar to ones they will see on the test. We will also be exploring some important American Themes.

Week of November 3rd.......

Honors American Literature:
This week, we will be working on completing our work for The Scarlet Letter. We will be working in class, but students should work at home to get everything finished. Everything is due next Monday, the 10th. Also, we will have Units 1-4 Vocabulary Test this Wednesday.


AP Literature:
Students will continue to present as needed to finish up presentations for the poetry project. We will also practice the poetry question for the AP Exam. We are using the 2010 released exam for practice.

Regular American Literature: 
We are going to work on our final paper for the Puritan period. Students will  be writing about Puritan values. We will work in the classroom for two days and the lab for three days. If students need more time, they can stay after school to work.

Week of October 27th...

 Honors American Literature:
This week, we are finishing The Crucible. Next week, we will finish up our work with The Scarlet Letter. Units 1-4 Vocabulary Test will be on Wednesday, November 5th. Also, remember that we will be taking a field trip on Thursday, November 20th. Students should bring their $10.00 and permission form as soon as possible.

AP Literature:
This week, we will not have a blog or quiz. Students will be presenting their poems and turning in the poetry project. This is a test grade. However, students should continue to read Things Fall Apart.

Regular American Literature:
This week, we are watching and discussing The Crucible. Next week, we will write the final paper for this unit. It is a test grade.

Week of October 20th...


Honors:
We are in the midst of reading and watching The Crucible. As we read / watch, we are discussing the true evil and Salem, possible causes of the hysteria, and modern examples of hysteria.

AP Lit:
This week, we are going to take a break from analyzing literature in class and focus on writing an essay for a college application. We will discuss what admission officers are looking for in applicants. We will also have some time to re-write AP practice question #2. Students will have a quiz over Section II of Things Fall Apart.

American:
We will begin the Salem Witch Trials and The Crucible this week. This will be the last thing we read about the Puritans. After we finish this section, we will be writing our assessment task essay for a grade.

Week of October 13th...

Honors:
All 10th graders will be taking the PSAT on Wednesday the 15th. Good luck! In class, we are going to begin our discussion on the concept of hysteria and the causes of the Salem Witch Trials. This is leading up to us reading The Crucible and watching the film in class.

AP Lit:
On Wednesday, students will take the long-awaited vocabulary quiz for Units 1-4. This will count as a test grade. Students also have the option of re-writing the Hypocrisy Paper. That re-write is also due Wednesday because that is two weeks after I returned the original. Students should be reading Things Fall Apart. We will have a quiz on chapters 1-6 on Monday (we moved this from Friday due to conflicts), and then we will have a quiz on chapters 7-13 on Friday. Students should continue to work on the next phase of their poetry project.

American:
We are reading and discussing Puritan poetry this week in groups. Near the end of the week, we will read selections from the sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" and talk about rhetorical strategies.

Week of October 6th....

Welcome Back from Fall Break! Hope everyone had a restful week!

Honors:
Those nominated for Gov. Honor's will have their interview at FCBOE on Wednesday morning. Good luck to all of those nominees! We will be reading "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" this week. This sermons contains examples of effective rhetoric. Students will write a response when we finish discussing which rhetorical device is most effective. Keep reading The Scarlet Letter at home!

AP Lit:
Poetry Project notebooks are due today. We will complete our critical theory readings, concluding with Achebe. We will then begin Achebe's novel, Things Fall Apart. This novel will serve as a contrast to Conrad's portrait of Africa. Students have certain sections to read each week, questions, and a quiz. We will also do some multiple choice practice this week for the AP exam. As the exam approaches, we will begin to do that more often.

Reminder! Students wishing to take the AP exam must pay a $15.00 per test they wish to take by Friday, December 12th. 


American:
We are going to pick back up with the Puritans this week. We will be finishing our discussion on Chapters 1-2 of The Scarlet Letter and writing a response about the significance of one of the symbols. We will also begin Puritan poetry this week.

Week of September 22nd.....

Honors:
We will continue looking at Puritan Poetry and write an Argumentative response over the poems we read. Remember to read The Scarlet Letter for homework. We will have a quiz on Friday and turn in the questions.

AP Literature:
This week, some students will be attending the SAT Prep Classes from 11-1 and the Executive Intern Meeting on Friday. We are going to begin reading and discussing critical literary theory this week. We will be discussing Post-Colonial theory and reading pieces for Said and Achebe. We will continue when we return from Fall Break if need be. You should work on your Poetry Project over Fall Break. The notebook is due on Monday, October 6th.

American Literature:
Students should be preparing for the GHSWT on Wednesday. They should check on the book cases in the front of the school, the lobby, or the cafeteria to find out where they will be testing. Good Luck!

Week of September 15th

Honors:
This week, students will present their Mini-Project on the Puritans. It may take two days, but all students should be ready to present on Monday. We will be working on Puritan literature for the next few weeks. Students should be reading The Scarlet Letter at home. Every Friday, students will turn in their questions and take a quiz. The six quizzes will be averaged for a test grade.

AP Lit:
This week, we will be reading "Hollow Men" by TS Eliot and discussing the connections between the poem and Heart of Darkness. We will use the poem to explore themes of the novella. Students will also turn in their Hypocrisy papers on Wednesday.

Regular American:
This week, we are working on preparations for the Georgia High School Writing Test. The test will be given next Wednesday (September 24th) to all Juniors. This test is a requirement for graduation.

For the Week of September 8th...


Regular American Literature (2nd, 4th, and 7th): 

We are starting to study the Puritans this week. Students will begin reading documents about the Puritans and by the Puritans this week.

Honors American Literature (1st and 6th): 

We will work on a Puritan mini-project this week in the lab. Students are working in groups to investigate certain topics about the Puritans. Students will present their finding next Monday and Tuesday, the 15th and 16th.

Also, the American Dream Essay, which is a test grade, is due Tuesday, September 9th. Students can share, email, or print the essay and bring to class. Essays are due before coming to class or paper copy in class.

On Friday, we will have a reading quiz over Chapters 1-4 of The Scarlet Letter. Students will also turn in their Reading Guide Questions for these chapters at this time as well.

AP Literature and Composition: 


Outside of class, students should still be reading Heart of Darkness closely and working on their Poetry Project (Project #1). Students will continue to have blogs due and reading quizzes on Friday.

This week, we will discuss the concept of hypocrisy and read literature dealing with this concept. Students will then relate this idea to Heart of Darkness through a short response.

Students will also begin a College Application Essay this week. It will be due next week.

For the Week of September 2nd

Homecoming Week!

Regular American Literature will be typing their papers about the American Dream. This is a test grade assignment.

Honors American Literature will begin reading The Scarlet Letter. They have a packet of work to complete as they read and reading quizzes on Fridays over assigned sections of the text.

AP Literature and Composition will be working on their Poetry Project. This project is a test grade. Students will have some time to work in the lab. Also, we will continue with our reading quizzes and blogs each Friday.

For the Week of August 25th.....

ALL Parents:

Progress Report grades are due Thursday. Students will receive their progress reports when we return from Labor Day Holiday.

AP Parents:
This week, we are mostly working on AP Test Practice, focusing on the multiple choice section and the prose question, question 2.

Students are also reading Heart of Darkness outside of class and will respond to Blog Question #3 by Friday. We have reading quizzes on Friday. I will take the scores from all of the reading quizzes (6 total for Heart of Darkness) and average them together for a test grade.

Honors Parents:

This week, we are continuing our discussion of the American Dream and what it means to us. We are looking at various documents from history and discussing their merit as persuasion and how they help us to better define the American Dream. When we finish reading and analyzing these documents, students will write an essay that I will use as an assessment of their understanding. We will begin brainstorming for the essay on Friday and write a rough draft in class when they return from the Labor Day holiday on Tuesday, the 2nd. The final draft will be due the following Monday, September 8th.

For Week Of August 18th...

Honors American Literature (1st and 6th Periods):

  • Students have checked out books that they should be reading at home for the Independent Reading Assignment (more details on my website). This will be an ongoing assignment through the semester. 
  • Students should be working on their vocabulary lists for Units 1-4 out of the red vocabulary book.
  • This week, we will begin talking about the American Dream and what it means to us. This will be a core theme of the whole course. 

AP Literature (5th Period):

  • Students should have been working on the final draft of their Between Shades of Gray essay. This is due Monday via email or printed copy brought to class. 
  • Students will be getting copies of the AP Literature syllabus on Monday. Please review the syllabus carefully and sign it. Students should bring it back on Tuesday signed. 
  • If students haven't created their blogs using Blogger, they should do so this week. If they are having trouble doing so, they should come and see me before or after school.  I will be glad to help them. 
Regular American Literature (2nd, 4th, and 7th) 
  • We are going to continue our discussion of the American Dream by reading documents pertaining to the subject. 
  • We are also preparing for the GHSWT  (GA High School Writing Test) each Wednesday. Students will take this test on Wednesday, September 24th.

For Week Of August 11th...

Honors / AP Students: 

All Honors/AP Students were required to read the One Book, Many Voices selection, Between Shades of Gray, for Summer Reading. One Book, Many Voices is a county-wide initiative funded and supported by the Sara-Hightower Regional Library. Its goal is to "foster literacy, encourage dialogue and build community in Floyd County by inviting citizens to read and discuss the same book and participate in programs related to the book and its themes" (One Book, Many Voices Website). One of the programs that all Honors/AP students will participate in is the essay contest. This will give students an opportunity to publish work and win a cash prize! AP Literature students have already written the first draft of the essay and the final draft is due on Monday, August 18th. 10th grade Honors students will work on the essay in class this week, with the first draft being due on Wednesday, August 13th and the final draft being due on Wednesday, August 20th. 

Also, please mark your calendars for Thursday, September 25th. The author, Ruta Sepetys, will speak at the Rome Auditorium at 7:00PM. Typically, tickets are sold for the event at Kroger, the library, and other places around town. Ticket prices are usually under $10.00. I am going on how they did it last year. I will let you know as soon as I have more information. This is an extra credit opportunity for students.
